2023 Chevrolet Pickup Truck Models | Updates & Overview

Over the last 20 years, the Chevrolet brand has been synonymous with the pickup truck segment due to its definitive Silverado Light Duty and Heavy Duty truck models. Some may not know that the Silverado was originally introduced into the Chevrolet lineup as a trim level on the 70’s C/K trucks, and was later given its own model in 1999 due to its overwhelming success. Since then, Chevrolet has carved out a large chunk of the national full-size truck market due to the Silverado’s long-standing reputation for dependability, capability, and performance. Five years after the introduction of the Silverado (2004), the Colorado was introduced as a mid-size truck option to round out Chevrolet’s truck lineup. With the pickup truck segment evolving at an ever-increasing rate, we have seen everything from overland-ready to luxury-based models introduced into lineups across brands. Below, you will see how Chevrolet is differentiating itself within the respective truck markets with their recently improved and planned pickup models for 2023 and 2024.

The All-New 2023 Chevy Colorado

2023 Colorado Updates

The coming year will be an exciting time for Colorado fans and owners as Chevrolet has completely redesigned the mid-size pickup, inside and out. “The all-new Colorado is enhanced in every way. With its rugged and sporty styling, enhanced capability, new technology, and customization options, it’s designed to be more discerning to customers and still offers them a great value” said Scott Bell, Global Vice President of Chevrolet. The entire Colorado lineup is built around a single wheelbase (with distinctive chassis stances) and cab configuration to tie each model back to a common theme: elevated design, enhanced performance, and useful technology.

Exterior

  • Clear to those familiar with the previous generation Colorado (2015-2022), the exterior has been redesigned to reflect the mid-size truck’s future and elevates itself beyond the competition, both functionally and aesthetically. We would personally describe it as rugged, but with refined, confident body lines. Each trim level provides its own personality, with design cues incorporating both urban and off-road environments.
  • Every trim sports a distinctive appearance, with off-road geared models like the Trail Boss planted in a wide, aggressive stance and LT standing with a sleek and sporty look. Each trim’s characteristics such as grille, bumper and accessory configurations will also be unique to complement the overall personality. Looking particularly at the ZR2, off-road focused additions like the skid plate (with red recovery hooks), 33-inch OD MT tires, and high-performance 3-inch lifted suspension will immediately stand out to the common bystander. Owners should not feel limited even if they choose to go with an entry-level trim, as on- and off-road accessories will be available across the lineup.

Interior

  • The interior is centered around a class-leading, customizable 11.3-inch-diagonal color infotainment touchscreen, and segment-first 8-inch-diagonal digital color instrument display.
  • 4 distinct interior options are available based on the selected trim level. Primary differences will be reflected in the stitching and color scheme. The interior is meant to reflect the feel of the exterior and will feature new round-outboard vents, wrapped and stitched door knee pads, and a center console.

Performance

  • The Colorado will house a single engine (2.7L Turbo) with 3 different variants, ranging in horsepower and torque. The engine receives a variety of enhancements for 2023 including a more rigid cylinder block casting, stiffer crankshaft, and fully forged bottom end to further lend to durability. Each engine variant is more powerful in terms of horsepower and torque than the previous generation’s 3 corresponding engine offerings.
  • The 2.7L Turbo engine will be mated with a second-generation 8-speed automatic transmission, with refinements to offer smoother and quicker shifting. This transmission excels particularly well with off-road, low-speed mobility.
    • 2.7L Turbo | 237 HP > 259 lb.-ft. Torque > Up to 3,500 lbs. Max trailering > MPG: TBD
    • 2.7L Turbo Plus | 310 HP > 390 lb.-ft. Torque > Up to 7,700 lbs. Max Trailering > MPG: TBD
    • 2.7L Turbo High-Output | 310 HP > 430 lb.-ft. Torque > Up to 7,700 lbs. Max Trailering > MPG: TBD
  • The new chassis gives the truck a 3.1-inch-longer wheelbase and shortened front overhang over its predecessor, allowing for greater cargo capacity and significantly improved approach angle for challenging terrains. As an example, the ZR2 has a 38.3-degree approach angle, 25.1-degree departure angle, and 10.7 inches of ground clearance.

Technology & Safety

  • As mentioned above, the Colorado receives an all-new high-resolution infotainment system and digital gauge cluster, meant to be fully customizable based on the driver’s wants and needs. With segment-first available Google Built-In, there is no need to utilize your phone while driving as Google Built-In can access maps, music, vehicle functions, and more.
  • Up to 10 camera views (class-leading) are accessible through the infotainment screen, with a segment-exclusive underbody camera on Z71 and ZR2 trim levels.
  • A suite of safety features is standard, and available, based on the customer’s needs. Chevy Safety Assist (standard for all 2023 Colorado) includes 6 safety features.
    • Forward Collision Alert
    • Automatic Emergency Braking
    • Front Pedestrian Braking
    • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
    • Following Distance Indicator
    • IntelliBeam (automatic high-beam assist)
  • Available safety features include Blind Zone Steering Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, HD Surround Vision, and Rear Pedestrian Alert.
  • 5 selectable drive modes are accessible through a console-mounted knob for varying road and terrain scenarios.
    • Normal: A balanced mode for everyday on-road driving.
    • Tow/Haul: Transmission shift points, throttle response, and additional calibrations optimized for trailering and hauling.
    • Off-Road: Specific tractive and other dynamic performance features designed for general off-pavement driving.
    • Terrain: Designed for low-speed rock crawling, with specific throttle control, brake performance, and other calibrations, with 3 settings.
    • Baja: Developed for high-speed desert running, with specific throttle control, transmission shifting, and other body/drivetrain control calibrations.

Trailering, Tailgate & Cargo Bed

  • Not all information has yet to be released related to trailering capability and features, but we do know that the 2.7L High Output Turbo engine will tow an estimated 7,700 lbs. with the Advanced Trailering Package and have an estimated max payload capacity of 1,684 lbs.
  • The Colorado’s camera technology allows for standard Hitch Guidance and available Hitch View, with additional diagnostic and monitoring features housed in Chevy’s Trailering App.
  • A new tailgate uses an ingenious design to double as a lockable, watertight storage compartment and cooler. It also features a convenient measurement tool in case you forget your trusty tape measure.
  • A singular bed length will be available across the lineup, spanning 62 inches in length with up to a best-in-class 17 tie-downs (8 standard).

The Recently Refreshed 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500

2023 Silverado LD Updates

The 2022 model year light-duty Silverado received a slew of updates in the form of interior and exterior appearance, performance improvements, and technological advancements. The most noticeable changes include the redesigned front grille and lighting configuration, plus an all-new interior design. The front row of the cabin features a beautiful 13.4-inch-diagonal infotainment touchscreen and 12.3 inch-diagonal-configurable digital instrument cluster (standard on the LT trim level and above). Additionally, overall material quality and appearance have improved tremendously throughout the cabin with leather appointments, wood trim, and refined stitching. For 2023, updates are relatively minor as the 4th Generation Silverado 1500 is only into the second year of its refresh. A couple of exterior paint colors will no longer be optionable but will be replaced with a pair of new color shades including Harvest Bronze Metallic and  Sterling Gray Metallic. The Duramax 3.0L Inline-Six Turbo-Diesel receives a slight bump in performance with 28 additional horsepower and 35 lb.-ft. of torque. Building on the Silverado ZR2, the ultra-aggressive off-road trim introduced in 2022, Chevrolet has developed the ZR2 Bison in conjunction with American Expedition vehicles to create an even more extreme off-road experience.

Exterior & Interior

  •  As mentioned above, the 2023 model year changes are minor. Exterior and Interior wise, there are no appearance changes across the lineup except for 2 new paint options (Harvest Bronze Metallic and Sterling Gray Metallic) and ZR2 Bison exclusive accessories. The ZR2 Bison trim level will be optioned with several off-road goodies such as 5 underbody skid-plates, rocker panel protectors, redesigned off-road front and rear bumpers with improved approach and departure angles, 18-inch wheels featuring a trim-exclusive design, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, matte-black tailgate panel and AEV badging throughout.
  • Important carryover updates from the 2022 model year include:
    • Updated grille and bumper design with LED daytime running lamps, fog lamps, and side mirror-mounted lights.

The Newly Updated 2024 Chevy Silverado HD

2023/2024 Silverado HD Updates

Similar to the light-duty Silverado, the heavy-duty Silverado does not receive any significant changes to the core 2023 model year lineup.
